The Sepulveda Transit Corridor project is a proposed monorail that would be singular in kind for a major US city and is poised to become one of Los Angeles’ most iconic features. The monorail would have 9 stations, starting at Exposition Blvd., and run north adjacent to I-405, connecting to the Van Nuys Metrolink station.

The project would make additional connections along the route to significant points of interest including, the Getty Center, UCLA, and the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center, in addition to major transit routes including, Metro’s E (Expo), G (Orange), and D (Purple) Lines and the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail.

YKD provided landscape design for all station plazas, landscape treatments along the alignment including CalTrans and City ROW, and system wide elements including Traction Power Substation and Operations and Maintenance facilities. Additionally, landscape planting areas integrated into the station architecture were included at the concourse and platform levels where feasible.

Overall, the planting design emphasized drought tolerant and California native plants to comply with Metro standards but was robust enough to offer a unique user experience across stations. A separate plant palette was developed to address specific conditions along the alignment, as well as several station types and support facilities. The various palettes included plants used for screening/massing, graffiti and vandalism prevention, stromwater planters, and to highlight people friendly plants with seasonal interest. Where appropriate, to help integrate the proposed plant palette and reduce the overall impact of the project on the existing context, existing trees that are healthy will be preserved.
