LOS ANGELES, CA
METRO GOLDLINE EASTSIDE EXTENSION
MARIACHI PLAZA
STATUS: Complete
CLIENT: Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority
The Mariachi Plaza Station is located in the Boyle Heights district of the City of Los Angeles and the plaza is the historic gateway to the Boyle Heights neighborhood in Eastern Los Angeles. Mariachi Plaza Station is one of two underground stations on the Eastside portion of the Metro Goldline.
The design of the Mariachi Plaza Station was inspired by the rich history of the plaza and culture. Unique elements that reflect the heritage of the locals include paving designed after Folklorico dresses commonly worn by Folklorico dancers; an existing kiosk donated by the Mexican State of Jalisco, the birthplace of mariachi music; colorful paving materials such as colored glass, lithotrite, and colored concrete; historic lights and benches. Mariachi Plaza is now a local favorite where residents and tourists hang out, shop at farmer’s market, enjoy live music played often at the stage, or hire a mariachi band for your special occasion.
